‘Three Score and Ten: a voice to the People’

Topic 2009  various artists (seven disc set)

A retrospective set of the 70 years of Topic records. Britain’s oldest independent label apparently.

Good liner notes.

Cecil Sharp’s legacy, plus the impact of electronic rock music, has left ‘folk’ music in a bit of a niche market instead of feeling like Our British tradition and also our local live music. The ‘singer songwriter’ genre doesn’t really manage to mend this gulf. The finger in ear bearded stereotypes that rose in reaction to Sharp’s plastic surgery on working class music have insulated us all from the beauty of our own indigenous music and even to our ability to sing.
