Peckham’s amazing Spike Island may have gone but the memories of freedom linger.
My one visit there last year was for an excellent cultural afternoon in which I heard a young women rapping about the Southeast (London) that really struck me as having powerful grass root message. Her name is Kate and she goes under the name of ExCentral Tempest – I bought a CD, ‘Save the Spike’ which had the ‘SouthEast rap on. It was really an example of the powerful voices that exist in local scenes that for whatever reason, and one is being too outspoken, never get commercially taken up and more widespread broadcast.
I thought it was important for Agit Disco to focus in on some of these talented rebels within their local contexts – but it is not suprising that the majority of the material refers to well-known artists. You can hear Kate on LastFm but not ‘Southeast’ which was the name of the rap I heard… Look out for her.
